Hurricane Gustav Approaches Haiti, Forecast to Enter Gulf of Mexico

Hurrican Gustav has gained strength in the southeast region of the Caribbean Sea as it heads beyond the Dominican Republic, passes over Haiti and makes its way toward Cuba and Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center projects that Gustav will enter the Gulf of Mexico by early Sunday morning.

Currently a Category One hurricane, Gustav's maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph with higher gusts. Although it is expected to weaken while making landfall over Haiti today, it is expected to restrengthen by the time it approaches Cuba on Wednesday. Forecasters predict that Gustav could be a Category Three hurricane by the time it enters the Gulf of Mexico.
